After PNG I taught for a short time in NSW and then did
further training and spent about 20 years working in community services mainly
in child protection in Sydney, Tamworth and the mid north coast although I did
set up a number of juvenile justice programs in northern NSW. I decided on a
complete change about 10 years ago and have had my own realestate business for
some years which has been fairly kind to me financially. Hopefully I will have
more time to surf and sail soon!

After PNG I taught in inner Sydney and then on Christmas
Island. I taught in various high schools in Canberra before settling in to an
intensive English centre for 15 years. I took early retirement in 2005, but
still do relief/contract teaching at the English centre. I live in Yarralumla
with my wife, Margie.

I taught in Bougainville, Rabaul and Port Moresby until
1979 at which time I joined the Public service Commission in Moresby. This was
followed some time with the NT government in Darwin. I then started work in
mining and have continued to work in that industry since then except for a couple
of years in aboriginal education in Queenlsand. I have worked in mining in PNG,
Indonesia and the Solomon Islands, and about 12 months ago returned to Australia
based in Brisbane.
I am married and have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Memories of Beag
- We flatted in Eurobin Avenue, Queenscliff in 1970
– Jacky, Gerri, Lydia and me. Beagley visited fairly often; also down the
road where Leonie, Larraine and Anne lived. One night Beagley persuaded a
few of us (and I don’t think he was under the influence, unlike the Mosman
tree swingers), to put sheets over ourselves, and wander down beside the lagoon
to the beach – pretending to be ghosts! Oh my, what a confession! Such childishness,
and fun! We booed at any passers by, and performed some spontaneous ritual
on the beach before returning. Wouldn’t have done it except for Beagley’s
contagious madness.
- My mother was a Tupperware dealer. She held a party
at our flat one night, and Beagley arrived, with a friend, Gay. I think Mum
was a little uncertain, but ever the polite hostess, just welcomed them and
they joined in the Tupperware games. You can imagine how Beagley played them
up. It wasn’t until the end that Gay came out as Kevin Lane – all made up
and dressed to kill, with sweet voice to boot!
- Another Beagley observation. We all know how outgoing
and loud he was. I remember that he was given a part in “Oklahoma”, and was
he nervous! Not only that, but he just wasn’t the Beagley we all knew on stage,
either. Too contrived for him.
- We usually got a lift to college with Trevor Treis,
sometimes one of “the brothers”, and occasionally with Beagley, who lived
in Dee Why with the long-suffering Ellie. I can remember one of those days,
when he was short of petrol, coasting all the way down the hill to college,
enjoying the high of driving in “angel gear”.
